Cast Iron Tea Pots: Useful Work of Art
A typical image that pops into our mind when we think of a tea pot is a huge ceramic pot usually covered with black soot for having spent too long a time hanging around hearths and fireplaces. To put it bluntly, it would never pass as an elegant piece of kitchenware to flaunt around when friends come over for tea.
Well, that was over a hundred years ago. The appearance of tea pots has evolved through the years and aesthetic elements like colors have been incorporated. They give tea pots a brand new reputation from ugly kitchen tools to lovely kitchenware worthy to grace dining tables on occasions.
Cast iron teapots originated in China and Japan. They were originally created to, of course, brew tea but they serve other household purposes such as to boil water for cooking and baths. Cast iron tea pots were a trusted gadget in the kitchen because they were sturdy and lasted for years.
Today, you can never miss to find at least one cast iron tea pot in every tea connoisseur's kitchen. It makes possible that perfectly brewed fresh herbal tea that we always love.
To purchase a cast iron tea pot is simple with only a few considerations. The basic is being aware of your personal preference of taste in your tea and this is highly important to those who are fond of drinking more than one type of tea. You should know that some of the aroma of tea is retained in the pot after boiling it. So unless you want your green tea to have a tinge of black tea, it is advisable that you use a separate tea pot for each type of tea to avoid fusion of flavor.
There is a good variety of cast iron tea pots sold in hardware stores, thrift shops and even antique shops. They come in numerous shapes, sizes, colors and designs. One most popular style is the Tetsubin tea pot that resembles the most to the traditional tea pots used in ancient Japanese tea ceremonies. Nowadays, shopping for cast iron tea pots is a real treat simply because there is a wide array of styles and designs to choose from and in every color and shape imaginable. The basic colors available are green and yellow. Should you prefer to buy a tea pot that matches the curtains in your dining room is all but impossible.
In order for your tea pot to serve many tea parties for years to come, make sure that it's properly taken care of. To clean, simply rinse it with warm water. Never use any soap or detergents and make sure that it has completely dried before storing it away to prevent rust from accumulating. Careful to avoid putting it into a dishwasher, freezer or microwave oven. This will cause damage to the interior enamel lining and you may never achieve the right flavor for your tea.
Cast iron tea pots are not only pleasing to the eyes but they are also useful and affordable. What's more? Their durability makes them the perfect family heirloom to pass on for generations.
